A visit to India’s wine capital : Sula Vineyards in Nashik, Maharashtra

Who doesn’t like to unwind after a long day with a glass of wine? I have always been a wine person and preferred international wines more than their Indian counterparts as many Indian wines tend to be fruitier. I had never visited India’s own Sula Vineyards until recently. I was looking for a place to escape for the weekend and came across its website. I thought to myself – why not? It would be fun to visit a winery for its beauty alone. I am so glad I went.

Nashik is known as India’s “Wine Capital” and for good reason. In Nashik, you have the Sula Vineyards, which was founded by Rajeev Samant in 1999. A 3 to 4 hour drive from Mumbai, Sula Vineyards should be on everyone’s travel list. Just being there is a fabulous way to unwind from the hectic bustle of city life and you can sample some wine, and take some beautiful walks in or bike rides across its scenic estate. The harvesting months of January to March are the times to visit. During this season, you can participate in wine stomping as well.

Sula Vineyards has many things to offer. The coffee and food is great for starters. Its special tasting room has been well planned, with a balcony that provides sweeping views over the vineyard. You can also go for an escorted tour through the winery, and this includes a tasting of wines. These happen on an hourly basis, and give decent knowledge about wine making process and a basic taste-bud training of understanding good wines. And afterwards, all you can do is unwind some more with a glass of wine on the tasting room balcony and watch the sun go down.

All in all – and while Sula will still not be in my top 5 wines that I love – I truly recommend checking out this place. It’s a perfect weekend getaway that you will not regret.

Wines I tried while I was there: Rasa Zinfandel, Sula Brut Tropicale , The Source Cabarnet Sauvignon, Sula Zinfandel Rose

How to get there:

Nashik is 180 km from Mumbai, reachable by car, bus or train. You can find detailed directions on the Sula Vineyards website.
